About Karen Fulk
I live on 20 acres in the California foothills, with my husband of 43 years, our dogs, cats, chickens, and temporarily one of our 3 children. I have a wonderful 24x36' studio upstairs in our barn where I paint, sculpt, frame, and fix stuff. I'm primarily an oil painter, but I love doing narrative sculpture as well. My website goes in all my directions (karenfulk.com) which include my main income: CARICATURES! and ceramic "FAMOUS FACES" which I've had fun doing for the past 3 years both for fun and as commissions.
I received my BA degree at the University of California at Davis in 1965 and studied under most of the notorious and famous artists that taught there: Wayne Thiebaud & Robert Arneson being the most well known. Their influence as well as their humor is seen in my work, but with a twist. My spiritual take on life is from my personal relationship with Jesus, my Saviour. He is my "Super Hero" and much of my latest work says so in the funny ideas He brings to my imagination. I'm also currently painting some of my dreams and visions I've had over the past year, and illustrating some of my Pastors' dreams also.
I began my CARICATURE career at Disneyland during the summer of 1965 (summer of the Watts riots!) and have been doing them at parties and for gifts ever since. Their first and only instruction to me was, "Don't insult our guests." So for the most part, my exaggerations of the faces I draw are emphasizing the kind features, not the unkind. Except for politicians, of course.
Miriam Davis of Sacramento, CA taught me to sculpt my narrative ideas, and Tony Natsoulas was also instrumental in helping me develop a concept when he made my webpage.
I also worked as an Illustrator for several Ad Agencies doing storyboards and ad comps, and have done covers and spot illustrations for several magazines.
